How to Know if Your Food is Organic by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

Is Your Food Organic?

Make sure you know where your food comes from when shopping. According to Wikipedia, organic foods are made according to certain production standards that allow certain non-organic fertilizers to be used. Ideally, it is best to get your organic produce from your own organic garden. When home gardening is not possible get your organic produce from local farmers who still control their own seed and grow organically.

As an alternative, there is a way to safely shop in a grocery store when buying organic produce. The key is the bar code label. The tiny annoying stickers appear on almost all fresh fruits and vegetables. The stickers actually contain the secret code to whether the fruit is organic, conventional or genetically modified. Only conventional, non-organic fruits and vegetables have  bar code stickers that have only 4 numbers.
Both the organic and genetically modified bar code stickers have five numbers each.

The key to organically grown fruits and vegetables is they all have a 5 number bar code that begins with the number 9. Organic fruits and vegetables are required to be in separate areas in supermarket. The bar code sticker helps to confirm which type of produce is actually being purchased in case the food item has been put in the wrong location.

There is no requirement that supermarkets inform customers which fruits and vegetables being sold are genetically modified (GM). Genetically modified foods were first marketed in the early 1990’s, and have Monsanto’s RoundupÔ pesticide added to the genes of the plant. If you see a 5 number bar code that begins with the number 8 it may be Genetically modified.

Reading the bar codes will tell the truth about the source of the fruits and vegetables. This means that a regular banana bar code would be 4011, an organic banana would be 94011 and a GM banana would be 84011.

Use Strong Alkalized Antioxidant Rich Water to remove the yucky pesticide residue. Do You Eat Cashews?

DepressionAmazing Cashew Nuts!

(Source: NaturalNews)

The good news is, there is a natural alternative for these dangerous psychotropic
meds if you are trying to battle depression: cashew nuts!

A coulee of handfuls of cashews work like a prescription does of Prozac, according
to the Family Health Freedom Network, citing some of the latest research.

"Cashews are high in tryptophan, which the body turns into serotonin. Serotonin is
responsible for mood regulation, healthy sleep and even sexual desire in the body",
the site reported.

"Increasing your tryptophan intake by consuming whole, natural cashews sound like
an excellent alternative to prescription drugs any day. They also provide a host of
other benefits to the body as well, from your cardiovascular health to your digestive
system."

Health Tips Spot reported further that the cashew nut is also one of the world's
healthiest foods, though only a small percentage of the natural medicines database
is focused on cashew
benefits research.

These nuts come primarily from Brazil and a few countries in Africa. They are very
rich in vitamins, have a high beneficial mineral content, and contain good fat in the
form of essential fatty acids.

Enjoy the many health benefits these nuts can provide by adding them to your daily
diet.

Cholesterol Good or Bad? by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

There is a lot of confusion about cholesterol. Cholesterol is what the liver makes in order to   enable us to handle stress, the sex hormones and to reproduce. Cholesterol is an essential component found in hormones that also helps form the brain, bile acids, vitamin D and the steroid hormones produced in the adrenal glands

It has other functions including protecting blood vessels from inflammation. When blood vessels are inflamed they can spring a leak, causing a heart attack or stroke. Cholesterol is the way the body protects the blood vessel lining. Too much inflammation will result in excess cholesterol build up inside the arteries, creating another issue.

The solution is to reduce the cause of the inflammation. Inflammation is created by the Standard American Diet, or SAD for short. The SAD food list is high in carbohydrates, high in sugars and high in trans fats, all items found commonly in American fast food.

If your diet is good, but you have high cholesterol, your liver is probably having issues using the cholesterol. High blood cholesterol indicates that there is an inability of the body to correctly manufacture the needed hormones and vitamins. The solution to high cholesterol is to repair the digestive tract, and the organs involved in fat metabolism, the liver and gall bladder.

To determine if your fish oil is fresh, freeze it and then cut it open. If it smells fishy, it is rancid. Fresh fish oil does not smell. Rancid fish oil is in the same category as trans fat, not a beneficial food for the body.

Cholesterol does not need to be eaten, because the liver and other tissues can manufacture cholesterol from saturated fats. make the hormones that enable us to handle stress and reproduce. The key here is saturated fats in the diet, not trans fats. Saturated fats include the essential fatty acids found in avocado, flax seeds, chia seeds and fresh fish oil.

There is a natural solution to help repair cholesterol issues regardless if the levels are high or low. Levels that are too low will prevent your body from manufacturing sex hormones resulting in fatigue, infertility and impotency. Various alternative approaches to repairing cholesterol issues range from dietary and lifestyle changes to natural whole food support for the liver, gall bladder and digestive system.

Another solution is Alkalized Antioxidant Rich Water:  Alkalized water is the most hydrating water there is. This water tastes different and hydrates the body easier and faster than other waters. The high level of  antioxidants in this water when it is fresh make it beneficial for both the inside of the body, and the outside. Drinking this water allows the digestive system to become properly hydrated, which improves digestion and fat metabolism. TLC offers FREE samples of this water for 21 days on a trial basis. To learn more contact Dr. Yale today at (734) 664 - 0339

If you feel that you are dragging your body around or have difficulty with digestion,  there is a natural solution available. Get checked by Dr. Sherry Yale, DC at TLC Holistic Wellness in Livonia, MI if you are not sure if your liver, gall bladder and digestive system are working correcttly or not. Running Out of Energy? by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

Running out of energy refers to a condition where you keep pushing your body to go, or you feel like you have no motivation to do anything. This is not a reference to making sure that you have eaten a sufficient quantity of food or need better goals. Low or no energy refers to the reduced function of the hormonal system to generate energy.

The job of the hormonal system is to activate your entire body and keep it going all day. A normally functioning hormonal system would enable you to easily jump out of bed in the morning. How many of you have to drag your body out of bed and get a stimulant like a cup of coffee in order to function? If you are tired in the morning and/or need caffeine to get going, your hormones are not working well.

If you experience fatigue after lunch or midday, or reach for something sweet to eat to get some energy, your hormones are not functioning normally. Your hormonal system should be providing your body with energy all day, and allow you to relax and sleep at night. If you are having any difficulty getting to sleep, staying asleep or waking up frequently during the night, your hormonal system is out of balance.

In addition to fatigue, the other indicators of a hormonal system that needs help include, sugar and/or salt cravings, weight gain, pain, hair thinning or loss, cold hands and feet and feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Stress is one of the major reasons that the hormonal system fails to do its job.

Too much stress can play havoc with the hormonal system. Ongoing or chronic stress adversely affects your ability to make the hormones needed for daily function. The stress response of the body burns out over time causing fatigue, insomnia, altered mood, lack of motivation, poor digestion, decreased sex drive, irritability, depression, sugar cravings, chronic pain, inability to stay asleep, osteoporosis, weight gain, and more symptoms.

There is a natural solution to help repair hormonal imbalance regardless of the stage of hormonal function your body is in. Various alternative approaches to repairing hormonal imbalances range from dietary and lifestyle changes to natural hormonal support. Consult a holistic wellness physician to find out more about your hormones, what stage of hormonal function your body is in, and what can be done to rejuvenate your energy.

If you feel that you are dragging your body around or have difficulty getting motivated  there is a natural solution available. Get checked by Dr. Sherry Yale, DC at TLC Holistic Wellness in Livonia, MI if you are not sure if your hormones are working correcttly or not.  Dr Yale uses a simple, non-invasive method called NRT or Nutrition Response Testing to evaluate what your individual body needs are, and what your body wants.

Eating To Look Younger Part 1, posted on January 11, 2016 by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

As we start the New Year here are some great foods to add to your diet to help you feel and look healthier and enable your skin look younger.

Collagen: Collagen is used to make connective tissue for the skin. So does Vitamin C.  An interesting source of collagen would include honey. Honey has an amino acid in it called proline which is used to make collagen. Sweetener of choice – Honey.  I would avoid artificial sweeteners.  Bell peppers are a great source of vitamin C.

Essential fatty acids: EFA's nourish the skin, help maintain skin integrity and keep skin cells performing optimally. "Essential fatty acids, a component of all cell membranes in the body, regulate the flow of nutrients, waste materials, and water in and out of cells—which keeps you looking young."  Flax oil and walnuts.

Liver Cleansers: Foods that keep our livers cleansed of toxins, heavy metals and fats make our whole body function more efficiently. This makes us happier, which affects how we look. Plus, a healthy liver brightens our eyes and tightens our skin.  Best food for our liver – beets!  Also, green foods like broccoli and spinach take away the craving for sweets.  When you crave and eat sweets you are creating a process for wrinkles called glycation.  A wrinkle causing food would include yogurt.

Fresh herbs for flavor: basil, dill and parsley. If you have puffy bags under your eyes in the morning, you are almost certainly consuming much more salt than you need.  Another problem is alcohol: It dehydrates you and can make your skin sag. The worst combination is alcohol and salt, which causes puffy dark circles under your eyes. Don’t go to the bar and have chips and beer. Use fresh herbs instead of salt.  Sparkling water instead of alcohol.

Crunchy vegetables: Fresh raw veggies are as good for your grin as they are for your skin! Celerycarrots, string beans and cauliflower contain cellulose which helps scrub stains from your teeth—giving you a whiter, brighter smile. Both the cellulose and the [other] fiber in these foods act as abrasives that clean and remove bacteria from teeth.

Alkalized Antioxidant Rich WaterAlkalized water is the most anti-aging water there is. This water tastes different and hydrates the body easier and faster than other waters. The high level of  antioxidants in this water when it is fresh make it beneficial for both the inside of the body, and the outside. Drinking this water allows the skin to become properly hydrated, which improves facial muscle tone and reduces wrinkles.

You Are What You Eat

Since your body rebuilds itself, eat well for the holidays. Go easy on the sugars and junk food. Remember, you body has to make new heart cells and a whole new body from what you eat. Make sure you have a sufficient quantity of high quality protein.

You are more than what you eat. You are what you digest and metabolize. In order to rebuild your body it is vital that your body be able to use the food you eat to repair and regenerate itself. Dr. Yale welcomes her patients with open arms. She is willing to take the time to really listen to what her patients have to say so that they can work together to get to the root of the issue.

What Are Antioxidants?

Posted on February 13, 2015 by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC
Detroit Antioxidants And Weight Loss
As you listen to your favorite Detroit radio station, you will hear advertisements praising the virtues of a newly discovered foreign fruit that is rich in antioxidants. You also see similar ads on the side of big Bloomfield HIlls busses. Why all the hype about antioxidants?

For Detroit folks that are unfamiliar with antioxidantsthese chemicals break down or neutralize free radicals. A free radical is an unstable atom or molecule that affects cell membranes. Free radicals are produced by normal biological processes. Dr. Denham Harmon proposed in 1956 that free radicals underlie the aging process.
Not only are free radicals contributing to my wrinkles but they may make me fat!
According to Zane Andrews, PhD, a neuro-endocrinologist at Monash University. Andrews believes these molecules damage the cells that tell us we are full. As time passes these satiation sensors become weaker and our appetites become stronger.

One of the best ways to combat free radicals in Michigan is to eat a healthy diet rich in antioxidants. The Mayo Clinic suggests these antioxidant-rich foods readily available in Bloomfield HIlls grocery stores and Detroit farmer’s markets:
  • Carrots, apricots and other yellow and orange fruits and vegetables
  • Blueberries
  • Spinach and other green leafy vegetables
  • Tomatoes
  • Beans, peas and lentils
  • Fish, especially salmon
  • Nuts
There are also many powerful antioxidant herbs and nutritional supplements that are available in our office. Call (734) 664 -0339 today to schedule a no charge consultation with Dr. Solomon at TLC Holistic Wellness to determine if you can benefit from more antioxidants in your diet.

Another excellent way Detroit folks can fight free radicals is by drinking alkaline, antioxidant rich water created by a Japanese water processor. This 40 year old company has been making these water filtration systems that have helped people slow down the aging process. One glass of this water has the same amount of antioxidants as 2 and 1/2 pounds of blueberries!

If you live in Livonia, Bloomfield HIlls, Farmington Hills, Novi or the Detroit area and would like to sample this water contact Dr. Fischer by phone (248) 382-8668 or email drfischer@tlcholisticwellness.com.
