Why Calcium? by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

There are many indications of nutritional deficiencces that have been known for years.
Calcium is one of the most essential minerals to the health of the human body. Most people know that calcium is needed to build bones, but it is also needed in every cell of the body. Calcium is the key mineral to help activate the immune system to keep the body healthy, and to maintain normal muscle and nerve function.

Some common symptoms associated with calcium deficiency:
·      brittle fingernails, poor teeth, bone loss
·      numbness or tingling in your hands, feet or face
·      muscle spasms or muscle cramps
·      low resistance against infection, sinus trouble
·      memory loss, depression, irritability
·      insomnia, difficulty experiencing deep sleep

Today there is an abundance of food and nutritional supplements, yet there are many people who have a hidden calcium deficiency. There is a natural, inexpensive, non-invasive way to evaluate for the need for more calcium. You can have a calcium deficiency even if you are taking calcium supplements. It is not what you eat or supplement that matters. Can your body use your supplements and what you eat?

Utilization is what is important. Calcium from rock or cement is not utilized well by the body. The task is to find the correct source and amount of calcium for each individual. There is no such thing as one pill or one food for everyone. Fixing a deficiency can be very simple when using whole food calcium sources.

The best sources of calcium are the food sources, as they are the most easily metabolized sources of calcium. Eating fresh vegetables daily like broccoli, kale, parsley, and spinach provides the body with much needed calcium and other minerals. Foods high in calcium to add to your diet also include whole sesame and sunflower seeds, dulse seaweed, kelp and almonds. These foods have a more easily usable form of calcium compared to other sources.

We are all unique individuals, each with a different history, a different diet and lifestyle, different stressors, different metabolisms, and different nutritional needs. It is vital to find the specific type of calcium that your body can use so your muscles, nerves, bones, teeth and immune system function well.

If you have any of the above deficiency symptoms, there is help. A simple calcium test plus a review of your diet and lifestyle can easily determine what simple changes you can make to improve your body function, reduce your deficiency symptoms, and help you achieve optimal health and longevity.

Running Out of Energy? by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

Running out of energy refers to a condition where you keep pushing your body to go, or you feel like you have no motivation to do anything. This is not a reference to making sure that you have eaten a sufficient quantity of food or need better goals. Low or no energy refers to the reduced function of the hormonal system to generate energy.

The job of the hormonal system is to activate your entire body and keep it going all day. A normally functioning hormonal system would enable you to easily jump out of bed in the morning. How many of you have to drag your body out of bed and get a stimulant like a cup of coffee in order to function? If you are tired in the morning and/or need caffeine to get going, your hormones are not working well.

If you experience fatigue after lunch or midday, or reach for something sweet to eat to get some energy, your hormones are not functioning normally. Your hormonal system should be providing your body with energy all day, and allow you to relax and sleep at night. If you are having any difficulty getting to sleep, staying asleep or waking up frequently during the night, your hormonal system is out of balance.

In addition to fatigue, the other indicators of a hormonal system that needs help include, sugar and/or salt cravings, weight gain, pain, hair thinning or loss, cold hands and feet and feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Stress is one of the major reasons that the hormonal system fails to do its job.

Too much stress can play havoc with the hormonal system. Ongoing or chronic stress adversely affects your ability to make the hormones needed for daily function. The stress response of the body burns out over time causing fatigue, insomnia, altered mood, lack of motivation, poor digestion, decreased sex drive, irritability, depression, sugar cravings, chronic pain, inability to stay asleep, osteoporosis, weight gain, and more symptoms.

There is a natural solution to help repair hormonal imbalance regardless of the stage of hormonal function your body is in. Various alternative approaches to repairing hormonal imbalances range from dietary and lifestyle changes to natural hormonal support. Consult a holistic wellness physician to find out more about your hormones, what stage of hormonal function your body is in, and what can be done to rejuvenate your energy.

Running on Empty posted on 8 March 2015 by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, BS, DC, ND

                                                Running on Empty

This phrase conjures up images of your car running out of fuel while you are driving, with no available gas station to fill up your tank. Running on empty also refers to a condition where you keep pushing your body to go, and it has no more available fuel to use. This is not a reference to making sure that you have eaten a sufficient quantity of food.  Running on empty refers to the reduced function of the hormonal system.

The job of the hormonal system is to activate your entire body and keep it going all day. A normally functioning hormonal system would enable you to easily jump out of bed in the morning. How many of you have to drag your body out of bed and get something like a cup of coffee in order to function? If you are tired in the morning and/or need caffeine to get going, your hormones are not doing what they should.

If you experience fatigue after lunch or midday, or reach for something sweet to eat to get some energy, again your hormones are not functioning well. Your hormonal system should be providing your body with energy to function throughout the day, and allowing you to relax and sleep at night. If you are having any difficulty getting to sleep, staying asleep or waking up frequently during the night, your hormonal system is out of balance.

Avoiding Holiday Blues

All grains, flour and cereals are converted to sugar in the body in the same manner as refined sugar. Eating sugar routinely or even occasionally will ultimately create a vitamin B deficiency. The body uses B vitamins to metabolize any form of sugar that is eaten. Consuming large quantities of sugar and carbohydrates over the holidays can deplete the body of the B complex more rapidly.

A simple solution is to use molasses, which provides all the nutrients that enable the body to metabolize sugar.  Molasses is high in the whole B complex. It is a by-product of sugar production. In sugar cane processing the outer part is discarded when sugar cane is processed to make sugar. Molasses is from the outer part where all the nutrients are that would allow the proper digestion of the sugar.

The other food sources of the whole B complex include dried hot red pepper, sunflower seeds, pecans, sesame seeds, walnuts, almonds, brewers yeast, egg yolk, wheat germ, liver, rice bran, fish, fresh mushrooms and fresh leafy green vegetables.

A century ago the average American consumed less than 2 pounds of sugar. Sugar has become an addictive white powder that has been added to everything from catsup to vitamins. The average American today consumes over 180 pounds of table sugar each year! It only takes 2 tsp. of sugar to decrease immune function by 40%! The high intake of sugar is responsible for many of the unwanted health conditions in Americans.

A few of the symptoms of a B complex deficiency include sugar cravings, fatigue, irritability, depression, acne, insomnia, inability to think clearly, tingling in the hands and feet, dizziness, eye strain, heart issues and more.

If you have any of the above deficiency symptoms, there is help. A review of your diet and lifestyle can easily locate simple changes that could improve your health and reduce the deficiency symptoms. Consult with a knowledgeable holistic wellness health care professional to end the confusion on what products or foods would be best to help enhance enjoyment of the holiday season. Call TLC Holistic Wellness in Livonia today (734) 664 - 0339 to take advantage of our initial no charge consultation.
