Eating to Look Younger Part 2 posted on January 19, 2016 by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

Eating to Look Younger Part 2

Sea Vegetables: Polluted cells can't function at their optimum level. When our cells are functioning optimally, not only do we have more energy—we look and feel great. Sea vegetables are one of our richest sources of minerals and phytochemicals. These veggies help detoxify, rebuild and nourish all the cells in our body. Unhealthy foods, stress and environmental pollutants cause cells to age prematurely, potentially leading to thinning hair and premature wrinkles. Sea vegetables reverse this process!  Crunch them on your salad.

Meat and Lentils: As you age, your hair and skin cells become damaged, making you appear older. The protein in meat, chicken, and certain vegetables promotes cell growth and repair, which translates to younger-looking skin, fewer wrinkles, less hair loss and a glossy mane. To take a break from meat try lentils instead; they contain more protein than any other legume.

Eggs:  Vitamin A is especially important for skin repair, and decreased levels can lead to dry, flaky skin.  A lack of vitamin A may cause your skin to heal poorly and wrinkle easily.  A good source of vitamin A food includes eggs and some plants—carrots and broccoli, for example—supply beta-carotene, which your body converts to vitamin A as needed.

Almond or hemp milk:  Almond milk is a nutritious dairy alternative because of its high levels of magnesium, potassium, manganese, copper, vitamin E, selenium and calcium.  Hemp milk is a delicious, nutty-tasting non-dairy beverage that provides essential balanced nutrition. It's a fantastic alternative to soymilk and has a natural well-balanced ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids to keep your mind sharp, your immune system strong and your skin glowing.  Both almond and hemp milks are plant-based, and don't contain lactose. They offer high-quality protein that can give hair a radiant, healthy shine and helps keep skin soft.

Salmon and Avocados:  Salmon is more than a delicious meal—it's an anti-aging feast. Salmon has precious omega-3 essential fatty acids, which enhance blood flow. The pink/orange color of wild salmon is an anti-aging carotenoid that protects cell membranes. Salmon also contains DMAE, which improves facial muscle tone and reduces wrinkles. Add avocado for its antioxidant properties and you'll be sitting pretty after dinner.  Make sure you get wild salmon and NOT farm raised or genetically modified salmon.

Crunchy vegetables: Fresh raw veggies are as good for your grin as they are for your skin! Celerycarrots, string beans and cauliflower contain cellulose which helps scrub stains from your teeth—giving you a whiter, brighter smile. Both the cellulose and the [other] fiber in these foods act as abrasives that clean and remove bacteria from teeth.

Alkalized Antioxidant Rich Water:  Alkalized water is the most anti-aging water there is. This water tastes different and hydrates the body easier and faster than other waters. The high level of  antioxidants in this water when it is fresh make it beneficial for both the inside of the body, and the outside. Drinking this water allows the skin to become properly hydrated, which improves facial muscle tone and reduces wrinkles.

Enjoying Holiday Sweets Posted on November 19, 2015 by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

Sugar now has a bad reputation, as does fat. Both have been linked to a lot of degenerative diseases and unwanted health issues. So how do you make holiday cookies, cakes and pies without the traditional white sugar and solid white oil? You use good sugars and good oil.

No all sugars are the same. There are natural sugars and man-made sugars. Man-made sugar from corn used to be known as high fructose corn syrup. It has been renamed as fructose. Fructose was considered fruit sugar, but now it is a highly processed GMO corn sugar.

Fructose as a refined sugar spikes blood sugar rapidly, compared to natural sugars that are metabolized slowly as food. Another man-made sugar that has seen a name change contains aspartame. This artificial sweetener is now amino-sweet, with the same toxic chemical compounds.

Good fat in the form of oil is needed in all baked goods. The best fats and oils to use occur naturally as foods. Man-made oils are made by adding hydrogen gas to create a solid mass at room temperature. The process is called hydrogenation, and it produces a fat known as a trans fat or hydrogenated fat.

Trans fats are flat molecules, like a pad of paper. Good natural fat is like many crumpled up papers. Natural fats are easily used as building blocks by the body for the brain, nervous system and all cell membranes due to their shape. Only 18 days are needed for the body to use a good fat, while it takes 51 days to break down a trans fat.

This holiday season can be a time of great joy, and sharing many festive foods with family and friends. Join the growing movement of healthier food choices in preparing holiday sweets. Here is a simple guideline of what sugars & fats to avoid and what to use instead. Enjoy the sweetness of the holiday season!

Avoid These Sugars & Oils                                     Replace With These Sugars & Oils

White Sugar (made from GMO corn), Fructose AKA High Fructose Corn Syrup
Stevia, Organic 100% Cane Sugar, Organic Honey, Organic Coconut Sugar, Organic Raw Sugar or Organic Maple Syrup
Commercially Prepared Oils, Shortening, Margarine (Usually rancid synthetic oils with added chemicals and food colors)
Canola Oil /Cottonseed Oil (from GMO seeds)
Organic Coconut Oil
Organic Cold-Pressed Food Oils (best in dark bottles)

The Secret to Simple Weight Loss posted on February 28, 2015 by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC, ND

A healthy body is composed of 25% fat. Your body uses this fat in all cell membranes, and in nerve and brain cells. Good fat is not the body fat that you find around your abdomen or thighs. That extra body weight occurs from the consumption of wrong fats and excess sugars.

The body protects itself from toxins by surrounding them with fat and storing them. When there are no good fats, the body uses the bad fats to make cell membranes. The bat fat cell membranes prevent the toxins stored inside the cells from being released, adding to weight gain everywhere. In addition to weight gain, bad fats increase bad cholesterol (LDL) levels, and decrease good cholesterol (HDL) levels.

Man-made (bad) fats add to the toxic burden and increase body weight and inches. This includes the fat found in processed foods and margarine. These bad fats are non-digestible. To lose weight, consume good fats that are digestible, and are solid at room temperature, like coconut oil and butter. Avoid using Canola oil and imitation butters. Canola oil is highly processed Canadian oil made from the poisonous and deadly rape seed plant. Olive oil is the best oil to use on salads, and is better for cooking than corn or vegetable oil.

If you find that you cannot lose weight easily by changing your food intake, it could be because your body has stored too many toxins. Everywhere you look we are bombarded with chemicals. There are over 14,000 man-made chemicals in our food supply alone, not to mention the chemicals that we put on our skin in the form of soaps, lotions and cosmetics. The average American consumes 14 pounds of chemical additives, 180 pounds of table sugar, and 54 gallons of pop, in addition to bad fats. This contributes to weight gain and must change.

Everyone bathes daily in clean water, but do you drink water to clean the inside of your body? Your body is 70% water. Water is used to dilute and neutralize toxic chemicals. Without sufficient water these chemicals are stored in the body in the fatty tissues, adding to weight gain. So bathe your body on the inside each and every day to keep it healthy and to help it lose unwanted pounds.

The amount of water that your body needs daily is one-half your body weight in ounces. If you weighed 150 pounds you should drink 75 ounces of water daily. As you increase your water consumption toward half your body weight in ounces, you will find that food cravings will decrease, you will sleep better, you will have more energy, and you will lose weight.

If you are unable to drink half your body weight in ounces, you are drinking the wrong type of water. Not all waters are created equal. Some waters taste better than others, and are easier to drink. Clean healthy alkalized, antioxidant rich water is easy to drink and super hydrating. Many people who drink this type of water experience increased energy and easier weight loss. Contact TLC Holistic Wellness in Livonia, MI today for more information and to sample this delicious water. Call (734) 664 - 0339.

A New You in the New Year

A NEW YEAR, A  NEW YOU

Did you ever make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and then not lose the weight you wanted? Here are some simple tips to lose weight to start you on the road to a New You for the New Year.

These tips include what you drink and what you eat. It is true that you are what you eat.
To lose more weight this year you need to stop eating fat storing foods and eat fat burning foods.

Sugar is a fat storing food. Sugar is hidden in all processed and man-made foods. Sugar is the product of digestion of all carbohydrates. Carbohydrates include fruits, vegetable and all grains. Your body converts natural and man-made foods like potatoes, corn, pop, fries, chips, breads, pasta, cakes, candies, juices and cookies all into sugar. Eating more sugar than your body needs will cause you to gain weight.

By the end of the day you may be consuming anywhere from 1 cup to 3 cups of sugar. What the body cannot process or use, it will store as excess body fat around your waist, hips and thighs. To lose weight, look for the hidden sugars that you consume and begin to eliminate them from your diet.

Protein is a fat burning food. Your body is primarily composed of protein. Protein is broken down into the amino acids that make your entire body structure. If you are someone who avoids protein or who does not eat protein with every meal, you are increasing your weight with what you eat.

Eating protein increases your metabolism, allowing your body to lose weight as it builds muscle tissue. The energy provided by protein stabilizes your blood sugar, keeping your energy high. This eliminates the highs and lows you will feel from eating sugar. Look at your protein and sugar consumption and see if you are eating the correct amounts for your age, weight, height and body type.

To lose weight, eat good fat. Eating fat does not make you fat. It actually increases weight loss. Eating the wrong fat, or following a low fat diet, deprives the body of the essential fatty acids that it needs. Without sufficient good fat in your diet, you may experience low energy, poor concentration, dry skin and weight gain.

The key to weight loss is eating a balanced diet of protein, vegetables, fruits and good oils, as well as drinking water. Your body adjusts to the calories you put in, so reducing your caloric intake alone will not result in permanent weight loss. You need to eat the right foods for your body. Combining good food choices with a simple exercise program can start you on the road to a New You in the New Year.

For help with creating a balanced diet, visit TLC Holistic Wellness in Livonia, MI or call (734) 664 - 0339 to schedule a no charge consultation to find out how you can simply and easily lose weight.

Snow Shoveling Tips Back Pain Help

Snow Shoveling Tips Back Pain Help

As you might expect we see a lot of patients for back pain here at TLC Holistic Wellness. In fact, back pain is one of the most commonly reported injury and type of pain in our chiropractic office. This is because of how easy it is to hurt the back, whether from whiplash after a vehicle accident or due to improper posture form everyday activities.

But this time of year another common cause of back pain occurs more often when patients are shoveling snow, usually incorrectly. This is a hard job, and can take it toll on the body, particularly when you aren’t used to shoveling snow regularly or shovel snow improperly.

Thankfully, we provide treatments to help patients find relief from snow shoveling back pain, including adjustments and manipulations, massage therapy, and acupuncture.

Aside from these services, we also want our patients to understand the ways they can prevent back pain when shoveling snow. This includes the following tips:

  • ·         Stretching properly before and after.

  • ·         Using the right shovel. Ergonomic shovels are best.

  • ·         Lifting with the legs.

  • ·         Switching sides frequently while shoveling.

  • ·         Pace yourself.

  • ·         Stay hydrated.

  • ·         Get regular exercise year-round.

  • ·         Push the snow, rather than lift whenever possible.

If you are having back pain from snow shoveling, call Dr. Carol Ann Fischer at 734-664-0339.
