Why Calcium? by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

There are many indications of nutritional deficiencces that have been known for years.
Calcium is one of the most essential minerals to the health of the human body. Most people know that calcium is needed to build bones, but it is also needed in every cell of the body. Calcium is the key mineral to help activate the immune system to keep the body healthy, and to maintain normal muscle and nerve function.

Some common symptoms associated with calcium deficiency:
·      brittle fingernails, poor teeth, bone loss
·      numbness or tingling in your hands, feet or face
·      muscle spasms or muscle cramps
·      low resistance against infection, sinus trouble
·      memory loss, depression, irritability
·      insomnia, difficulty experiencing deep sleep

Today there is an abundance of food and nutritional supplements, yet there are many people who have a hidden calcium deficiency. There is a natural, inexpensive, non-invasive way to evaluate for the need for more calcium. You can have a calcium deficiency even if you are taking calcium supplements. It is not what you eat or supplement that matters. Can your body use your supplements and what you eat?

Utilization is what is important. Calcium from rock or cement is not utilized well by the body. The task is to find the correct source and amount of calcium for each individual. There is no such thing as one pill or one food for everyone. Fixing a deficiency can be very simple when using whole food calcium sources.

The best sources of calcium are the food sources, as they are the most easily metabolized sources of calcium. Eating fresh vegetables daily like broccoli, kale, parsley, and spinach provides the body with much needed calcium and other minerals. Foods high in calcium to add to your diet also include whole sesame and sunflower seeds, dulse seaweed, kelp and almonds. These foods have a more easily usable form of calcium compared to other sources.

We are all unique individuals, each with a different history, a different diet and lifestyle, different stressors, different metabolisms, and different nutritional needs. It is vital to find the specific type of calcium that your body can use so your muscles, nerves, bones, teeth and immune system function well.

If you have any of the above deficiency symptoms, there is help. A simple calcium test plus a review of your diet and lifestyle can easily determine what simple changes you can make to improve your body function, reduce your deficiency symptoms, and help you achieve optimal health and longevity.

How to Know if Your Food is Organic by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

Is Your Food Organic?

Make sure you know where your food comes from when shopping. According to Wikipedia, organic foods are made according to certain production standards that allow certain non-organic fertilizers to be used. Ideally, it is best to get your organic produce from your own organic garden. When home gardening is not possible get your organic produce from local farmers who still control their own seed and grow organically.

As an alternative, there is a way to safely shop in a grocery store when buying organic produce. The key is the bar code label. The tiny annoying stickers appear on almost all fresh fruits and vegetables. The stickers actually contain the secret code to whether the fruit is organic, conventional or genetically modified. Only conventional, non-organic fruits and vegetables have  bar code stickers that have only 4 numbers.
Both the organic and genetically modified bar code stickers have five numbers each.

The key to organically grown fruits and vegetables is they all have a 5 number bar code that begins with the number 9. Organic fruits and vegetables are required to be in separate areas in supermarket. The bar code sticker helps to confirm which type of produce is actually being purchased in case the food item has been put in the wrong location.

There is no requirement that supermarkets inform customers which fruits and vegetables being sold are genetically modified (GM). Genetically modified foods were first marketed in the early 1990’s, and have Monsanto’s RoundupÔ pesticide added to the genes of the plant. If you see a 5 number bar code that begins with the number 8 it may be Genetically modified.

Reading the bar codes will tell the truth about the source of the fruits and vegetables. This means that a regular banana bar code would be 4011, an organic banana would be 94011 and a GM banana would be 84011.

Use Strong Alkalized Antioxidant Rich Water to remove the yucky pesticide residue. Food tastes fresh picked and can be stored longer. This water is one of the 7 different types of water that an advanced water technology device produces. The drinking water tastes different and hydrates the body easier and faster than other waters. It has a very high level of  antioxidants when it is fresh making it beneficial for the body.

Get checked by Dr. Sherry Yale, DC at TLC Holistic Wellness in Livonia, MI if you are not sure if your body has an overload of pesticides. Dr Yale uses a simple, non-invasive method called Nutrition Response Testing® to evaluate toxities and deficiencies to determine what your individual body needs and wants.

Your Key to Fat Health posted by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

Are Your Eating Fat?

There are good fats and bad fats. A major irritant to the digestive tract is Trans fat. These bad trans fats are used in all commercially processed food products. Trans fats take 120 days to break down. Because they take 3 months, they cause an inflammatory reaction in the GI tract and throughout the entire body.  Good dietary fats are used by the body within 18 days to make cell membranes, brain cells and hormones.

If you want to be healthy you must eat good fat, not Trans fat. Your body needs good fat to function properly. Nearly half of the dry weight of the brain is fat, and a quarter of this is cholesterol. Besides the brain, every cell membrane in the body contains fat, and some of those fats cannot by synthesized -- making it essential to obtain these fats from diet.

There are two fatty acids which cannot be manufactured in the body, and which must be obtained from dietary sources. These are the essential fatty acids, which are needed by the brain and all cell membranes. The essential fatty acids are found in the diet in only a few food sources: flaxseed, cold water fish, and fish oils.

These highly beneficial fats are called the Omega-3 and Omega-6 oils. The correct dietary ratio for optimal health between these two oils is 2 Omega-6 to 1 Omega-3. Yet, the average American diet has a ratio of 25 Omega-6 to 1 Omega-3.

The liver and gall bladder are responsible for fat metabolism. The liver makes bile, the ingredient necessary for the breakdown of fat. The gall bladder is a storage sac for the bile, and releases the bile as needed into the digestive tract. When fats and oils are not digested properly the body cannot correctly make or use cholesterol, make hormones or bile.

Poor fat digestion affects the balance of hormones, the formation of vitamins, creates pain and inflammation in the body, alters skin color and texture, and causes digestive difficulties. The body must be able to digest all fats, including the essential fats to achieve optimal health. The answer is not a low fat diet, but to restore the digestive tract to normal function, so that it can digest fat properly.
Not sure what about your overall digestive function or what fats your might need in your diet? There is a simple way to find out. Get checked by Dr. Sherry Yale, DC at TLC Holistic Wellness in Livonia, MI if you are not sure what fats are best for you to eat. Dr Yale uses a simple, non-invasive method called NRT or Nutrition Response Testing to evaluate what your individual body needs are, and what fats your body wants.

Eating To Look Younger Part 1, posted on January 11, 2016 by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

As we start the New Year here are some great foods to add to your diet to help you feel and look healthier and enable your skin look younger.

Collagen: Collagen is used to make connective tissue for the skin. So does Vitamin C.  An interesting source of collagen would include honey. Honey has an amino acid in it called proline which is used to make collagen. Sweetener of choice – Honey.  I would avoid artificial sweeteners.  Bell peppers are a great source of vitamin C.

Essential fatty acids: EFA's nourish the skin, help maintain skin integrity and keep skin cells performing optimally. "Essential fatty acids, a component of all cell membranes in the body, regulate the flow of nutrients, waste materials, and water in and out of cells—which keeps you looking young."  Flax oil and walnuts.

Liver Cleansers: Foods that keep our livers cleansed of toxins, heavy metals and fats make our whole body function more efficiently. This makes us happier, which affects how we look. Plus, a healthy liver brightens our eyes and tightens our skin.  Best food for our liver – beets!  Also, green foods like broccoli and spinach take away the craving for sweets.  When you crave and eat sweets you are creating a process for wrinkles called glycation.  A wrinkle causing food would include yogurt.

Fresh herbs for flavor: basil, dill and parsley. If you have puffy bags under your eyes in the morning, you are almost certainly consuming much more salt than you need.  Another problem is alcohol: It dehydrates you and can make your skin sag. The worst combination is alcohol and salt, which causes puffy dark circles under your eyes. Don’t go to the bar and have chips and beer. Use fresh herbs instead of salt.  Sparkling water instead of alcohol.

Crunchy vegetables: Fresh raw veggies are as good for your grin as they are for your skin! Celerycarrots, string beans and cauliflower contain cellulose which helps scrub stains from your teeth—giving you a whiter, brighter smile. Both the cellulose and the [other] fiber in these foods act as abrasives that clean and remove bacteria from teeth.

Alkalized Antioxidant Rich WaterAlkalized water is the most anti-aging water there is. This water tastes different and hydrates the body easier and faster than other waters. The high level of  antioxidants in this water when it is fresh make it beneficial for both the inside of the body, and the outside. Drinking this water allows the skin to become properly hydrated, which improves facial muscle tone and reduces wrinkles.

A New You in the New Year posted on January 1, 2016 by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

weight-loss
Did you make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight? Here are some simple tips to start you on the road to a New You in the New Year.

It is true that you are what youeat. To lose more weight this year you need to stop eating fat storing foods and eat fat burning foods. Getting your metabolism to work efficiently is also important in weight loss.

Having an efficient metabolism means correctly digesting foods, and burning stored body fat for fuel. Food digestion requires the proper combination of digestive enzymes produced by the stomach, liver and pancreas. Failure to digest efficiently results in the undigested food being stored as unwanted body fat.

Sugar is a fat storing food. Sugar is hidden in all processed and man-made foods. Sugar is the product of all carbohydrates. Carbohydrates include fruits, vegetable and grains. Your body converts natural and man-made foods like potatoes, corn, pop, fries, chips, breads, pasta, cakes, candies, juices and cookies into sugar. Eating more sugar in the form of carbohydrates than your body needs will cause you to gain weight.

Your body needs 80-100 grams of carbohydrates daily for fuel. Carbohydrates are the kindling to the fire. The body burns them quickly and then burns the slower burning fuel, fat. The body cannot burn stored fat when carbohydrates are eaten too frequently.

The average American consumes between 300-600 grams of carbohydrates daily, or 1-3 cups of sugar. What the body cannot process or use, it will store as excess body fat around your waist, hips and thighs. To lose weight, look for the hidden sugars and eliminate them from your diet.

Conquering Weight

Posted by Dr. Carol Ann Fischer, DC

As we start the New Year, win the battle against holiday weight gain or that stubborn weight that refuses to budge.

Unwanted weight gain occurs primarily from hormone imbalance. Excess dietary sugar and carbohydrates trigger the body to go into fat storage mode. When Trans Fats are part of the diet the body is unable to use or metabolize them. More fat storage occurs.

Excess sugars and Trans Fats are stored as body fat, especially around the abdomen, butt and thighs. The body will do what it can to store these as far away from the heart as possible. This is one reason why muscles become marbled with fat.

Once excess fat is present, the body will use the fat to store excess fat storing hormones and toxins. The more body fat, the more the hormone imbalance occurs.

Toxins abound in personal care products, household cleaners, and our food, air and water.

*   There are 1700 new chemicals released yearly in the US. Only 45% are tested for toxicity.
*   More than 700 chemicals are added to drinking water supplies.
*   Common personal care cosmetics expose people daily to over 200 different hormone altering or cancer causing chemicals.
*  The average American consumes 14 pounds of chemical additives, 180 pounds of table sugar and 8 pounds of commercial table salt yearly.
*  During processing and storage 10,000 compounds are added to the more than 320,000 processed     foods available today.
*  Of the many toxins found in packaged foods, the worst is Trans Fat or partially hydrogenated fat. This fat raises LDL cholesterol and causes additional hormone stress.

Without good dietary fats the body is forced to use Trans Fat in its cell membranes. Water and nutrients cannot get into the cells and toxins cannot get out. Toxins become stored in more body fat and hormone stress/imbalance increases.

Good fat is essential for the body. It also protects the brain and nervous system. Every cell membrane in the body contains good fat. The body requires good dietary fat like flax seed, avocado, chia seed, olive oil, and fresh un-rancid Omega 3 fish oil to enable it to balance hormones.

To conquer the weight and win the battle requires simple changes in dietary & lifestyle habits including healthy water and nutrition to help re-balance the hormones naturally, and the release of fat burning hormones instead of fat storing hormones. This strategy successfully allows the body to gently release the toxins and burn the fat. You can be the winner in the weight loss battle!
