Food Allergies

Upwards of six percent of children in the U.S. under the age of 18 have food allergies, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The risk of food allergies is greater if a child is under the age of three or has a genetic predisposition to allergies, although any child can develop a food allergy.

While some allergic reactions to food can be mild, others may come on suddenly, be severe, and even be life threatening as in the case of anaphylaxis. The most common signs of food allergies include:

  • ·         Hives or a rash

  • ·         Tingling in the mouth

  • ·         Swelling in the throat or tongue

  • ·         Feeling dizzy

  • ·         Cramps in the abdomen

  • ·         Coughing

  • ·         Breathing difficulties

  • ·         Diarrhea or vomiting

  • ·         Lack of consciousness

Practically any food can cause a food allergy, but the most common food allergies, particularly during childhood, include milk, eggs, nuts, soy, shellfish, and wheat.

Here at TLC Holistic Wellness, we recommend people with food allergies  be diligent in reading the ingredients found on food product labels.  This will ensure that a food isn’t consumed that causes an allergic reaction.
